Fountain - boy holding a fish on a turtle

At the Thame War Memorial on the evening of Remembrance Day, the spread of floral wreaths and tributes was heartening and impressive. I was then drawn, as always, to the well lit fountain resplendent with a boy holding a fish and standing on a turtle. There is a wonderful story around this simple sculpture - it was originally made by Faith Winter and was given to the town by a member of the Thame family Pearce (a cousin to the Pearce Wool Stapler family), when he emigrated to Australia and wanted a lasting memorial to his family in the town. The current incumbent is the second version and has twice been stolen. It was last recovered when it was spotted in the window of a London antique dealer by a Thame resident who works in the City and was returned to its rightful place as part of a fountain in Thame’s Memorial Garden on Saturday May 14 2005 by the Mayor of Thame, Cllr David Dodds.
