one day in France

And again

This morning, with the mist swirling around, many of us were up on a hill just south of Saintes, remembering 9000 soldiers buried at the German cemetery.
The flags were all at half mast, secured with black ribbons, and there were lots of armed police on the road outside slowing the traffic. It all passed without incident, and we moved on to a nearby village to do the same at their war memorial, before heading to the local hall for another vin d'honneur ( paid for by the German consul who was present)
Goodness knows what the locals thought, hearing the German national anthem playing through the mist on a Sunday morning, it was all quite surreal.
