Great spotted Woodpecker – (Dendrocopos major)

Had a good clear out this morning and took a couple of loads down to the Dump Recycling Centre.  Came home set up the camera, replenished the birds' feeder, made a cup of coffee and waited!  Got visits from jackdaws, blackbirds, sparrows, blue tits, a robin, and surprise, surprise, this gorgeous Daddy Woodpecker!  Never seen them around here before let alone in my garden - and so I was over the moon. He only stayed for seconds - just long enough for me to release the shutter.  I expect he was only sampling the goods - if he liked what he found maybe he'll be back.  He is a male - see the red at the nape of his neck. If you want to hear his call click HERE!  and scroll down.
