A 1950's style Carmen at the opera
Fleur and I went to the opera to see the classic Carmen by Bizet. The artistic leader and conductor Dmitri Jurowski sets the story in America in the 1950's with ketchup, pizza, police uniforms and furniture of that period, caravans and so on. It often turned into a circus and some scenes were very burlesque. A little over the top when one counts the amount of underwear seen in one opera. I would prefer to keep the half nakedness to MTV clips.
Perhaps I am getting old fashioned but I would love to have seen the classical Carmen with torero's and bohemian women in colorful traditional Sevillan dresses.
Fortunately Don José sang very good and the music is so strong that it drags you into the story anyway.
Well, the cheerleaders were fun...
