Derelict Sunday: The Seaf

In around 1820 the Earl of Seafield, fed up with having the messy medieval town of Cullen on his door step, had it demolished and the residents moved to a new town he'd had built for them half a mile away.

The centrepiece of the new town of Cullen was the Square, one corner of which featured a combined construction of Town House and coaching inn.

The Seafield Arms - affectionately known as the Seaf - has been a central part of Cullen life for almost 200 years. Unfortunately it's had a somewhat chequered history, and most recently has sat empty since suddenly closing for business in 2011. Although it remains empty and to all intents and purposes looks derelict, its future appears positive; it was purchased in 2014 by a local businessman who has now unveiled plans to refurbish the core of the Seaf as a high-end boutique hotel, while converting some outbuildings to flats and building townhouses on land at the rear of the property.
