Neither had I before coming to Thailand. We use these same baskets to make sticky rice or steam vegetables. Whatever you're cooking is placed in the basket and the basket is placed over a pot of boiling water. Cover with a lid and let it steam until cooked. So easy! (Except for the time that we didn't notice that all the water had evaporated and we started smelling burnt basket...)
