Wasp Nest

At last the wasp nest has been exposed and was today removed from the roof above the patio door. Here it is, the right way up, with a £1 coin for scale, and accompanied by a tiny nest that was found close by.

Close study shows an amazingly intricate structure and quite large - about eight inches ( 20cms) in diameter. The open ends in the photo are where it was attached to the flat surface of the soffit, the entrance hole is tucked below the brood chamber. The view of the underside ( extra photo)  reminds me of a wig or perhaps a decorative hat, with swirls of streaked paper ribbon, different from the bird box nest earlier this year, whose layers were laid down evenly .

We could not bear to destroy it so have placed it in a  cardboard box meantime, as it is extremely fragile.
