The Happy Squirrel
It was first thing in the morning after what had been a rather chilly night. I could hear Dexter's tail thwapping loudly. He was sitting by the deck doors, intently watching the squirrels play.
There were two of them, and with the cooler temperatures, it seems their thoughts had turned to snuggling. Or something. The one squirrel chased the other up and down the branches as we admired their acrobatics.
Nobody caught anybody, but there was plenty of tail fluttering and carrying on. I can't always tell if the squirrels are loving or fighting. Maybe it's that way sometimes with people, too.
Then the one squirrel scampered up to the top of the tree with its little green prize, and there it sat grinning in the sun. I honestly thought it was smiling, it looked that happy.
And who wouldn't be? A tasty little morsel, a (possible?) romance, and sunshine on the furry little face after a long, cold night. Ahhhh . . .
The song to accompany this image is The Happiest Squirrel in the Whole U.S.A. OK, so the word is actually Girl, not Squirrel, but we can sing it however we want to, right? ;-) It was number one on the country charts in spring of 1972. Here's Donna Fargo, with The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.
