Tough and reliable

Hydrangeas - the old fashioned kind, pink in our soil. We have several shrubs of them, and they come up every year, just when you think they will never flower and stop looking like a bush of sticks.
They are old - possibly as old as the house ? built in the 1950's. But they provide so much colour in the later part of the summer, I am quite happy for them to stay in their unfashionable glory !
The flowers are just developing now, and each one has a tiny, fat square cushion inside it.
