Unexpected candles

My youngest grandchild was 5 today. She's really been celebrating this birthday since her party last Saturday, but today we escaped from the aftermath of the house alterations and drove over to catch the end of the day with one very tired little schoolgirl. The admirable staff at the Loch Fyne restaurant on Newhaven Harbour came up with the idea of putting candles in some ice cream to finish off the meal, so she summoned enough energy to blow them out.

And then, O Best Beloved, her grandfather summoned enough energy to drive home again. Five years on from the snowy drama surrounding her arrival in the world, we look back in wonder at all we did then. 

And so to bed ...
