M and I were on this march in the centre of Montpellier this afternoon with several hundred others. An uplifting event with clowns, music, dancing and a human chain which circled the statue of the pacifist Jean Jaurès on its way to the place de la Comédie. As you can see, the demands of the demonstration went far beyond:
'What do we want?
A legally binding intergovernmental agreement to restrict C02 emissions in order to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees!
When do we want it?
Preferably within the next two weeks!'
Most if not all the people on the march were quite happy to chant the slogan above, showing that most recognise that tackling this issue means tackling rampant consumerism, world trade, and the current economic and political system, for starters.
I suppose that the French government is well aware of how widespread and radical the environmental movement is, which is why they have scandalously used the state of emergency to place under house arrest 24 environmental activists, who are not known to have committed any offence. The order lasts until the end of the Paris conference, and includes Joel Domenjoud, a member of the legal team of Coalition Climat, the umbrella grouping of environmental organisations which organised many of the protests today.
Many local authorities have also used the emergency laws to ban climate marches, for example in Lyon and Marseille, even in nearby Sète. It wasn't clear whether today's march in Montpellier had been approved, some demonstrators said it  was in effect illegal.
Maybe we should be proud that they see us as a threat.
