On the way home from Kendal this morning we called in at an Award winning farm shop. The object was to order the boiled ham which will feed the family over Christmas.

I have been there many times but have never noticed that in what is now the basement gift and art shop cows had been milked every day without a break for 240 years.

This was the farm which served the nearby National Trust property occupied by the same family for 800 years.

No doubt life was hard but at least the dairymen did not have to worry about huge supermarkets forcing down their standard of living.
