Dormouse nibblings
We had a wonderful talk this evening at the Horsham Natural History Society all about Dormice, they are such endearing, secretive little balls of fur with big eyes and ears!
Because they are nocturnal and arboreal and you need a licence to handle them, one way of surveying to see if you have them in a habitat is to look for hazelnuts which have been opened and eaten by chewing the end off. Other small mammals also do this, but the holes gnawed by dormice are distinctive with no tooth marks on the inside, just a smooth rim such as these.
I think I might pay far more attention to hazelnuts in future!
