borthwick castle
A well preserved medieval fortification built for the Borthwick family in 1430. It lies 12 miles south of Edinburgh on a raised and protected site. Mary, Queen of Scots slept there more than once, we are told
Restored from 1914 it was leased from the family in 1973 to be converted into a hotel, its present use.
This is not its best side but I spotted it from the Borders railway on my way south to Gala' . Solar panels show a 21st C. influence above the medieval stone walls
