Luminaria

Luminarias are said to originate from Spaniard merchants who adopted and adapted the paper lanterns from Chinese culture. They made their own version when they returned to New Spain for use during the Christmas season, this time made of more "hearty" materials.

Traditionally, luminarias are made from brown paper bags weighed down with sand and illuminated from within by a lit candle. They are arranged in rows to create displays. The hope is that the lights will guide the spirit of the Christ child to one's home. Some use them as a signs welcoming Mary and Joseph, some use them to show there's always a welcome for those without a home.

So here are my luminarias ... lit every evening through advent, lighting our doorway. Come on in .... the kettle's always on
