Volcanic Eruption
Usually the December U3A geology meeting is more informal, so today we had a relaxed look at the different ways that volcanoes erupt. This included excellent photographs and a practical demonstration, using a tank of water and different coloured solutions, to show how, after an explosive eruption, the plumes develop and spread.
We also had unusual samples of rock and lava bombs, all of widely different shapes, forms and weight, from pumice to obsidian; plus the ever-popular quiz provided by our resident advisor, Angus Miller. Oh, and seasonal snacks, of course..
After a day of torrential rain we came home in snow; not much but I understand the traffic has been badly affected, so stay safe out there, Blippers.
