Festive Music
You know that December has arrived. It seemed everywhere I went today there was the sound of Christmas music. And it has to be said that some was much more welcome than others.
This brass band was making its debut for the season at this same supermarket a week ago, and it was back there today to instil festive spirit into weekend grocery shoppers.
Mind you, at another place I visited earlier I did think the music needed to be somewhat more lively to instil anything like Christmas spirit. It wasn’t till I had been in the shopping area for some ten minutes or so that I realised it wasn’t canned music but another brass band. Unfortunately it did little to generate a feeling of wellbeing in me, however close to Christmas we are getting.
So does the background of music encourage shoppers to part with their cash in the store? It does provide an opportunity perhaps to collect for charity, which in principle has to be commended. Or not, if you are faced with a different collecting box at each shop or shopping area you visit.
But back to the sound of music . . . let’s not be a killjoy or scrooge but applaud the musicians for seizing the opportunity of coming out onto the streets, and if they are raising cash for a good cause, full marks!
