Puggles The Pug.
One of the oldest dog breeds in the world, Pugs existed in China around 700 BC. There is an ancient Chinese law saying that only Emperors can own them unless they gave one as a gift to somebody else. Illegal ownership was punishable by death. The Pug had it's own living quarters and servants within the palace and was guarded by soldiers. They commanded the highest respect and Emperor Ling, 168 - 190 AD, gave the female Pugs the same rank as his wives. The spread of Pugs happened when the Dutch discovered China and started trading, not with the dogs though, these were smuggled out by the sailors. Around 1736 the Pug was the secret symbol of the Mopsorden ( Order of the Pug) and also the Freemasons. They were a favourite of Queen Victoria who banned the cropping of their ears. Also fanciers were the Duke and duchess of Windsor. This little pup was playing in the park with it's young owner and it was the nicest picture I got on this dismal, grey day.
