Welcome to Bristol

The M32 is the quickest way into Bristol. It runs 8 miles in from the M4 right into the heart of the city.

Built between 1966 and 1975 it completely altered the eastern side of the city. There is some information regarding its history on wikipedia and something called the motorway archive. Information is brief, this is a short and undistinguished road.

If you live in this part of the city you are aware of it almost constantly and unnoticed as the background to all other sounds. Behind everything the constant white noise.

What the histories online don't mention are the effects of this road upon the neighbourhoods it springs over and cuts through. The sterilising effect of its great concrete bulk and the vast areas of shadowy no-mans land.

I've started a project to record Bristol's Bridges. Here is a recording I made under the M32.
