First Winter Rose of the season

Helleborus is a perennial plant that flowers in winter. It is tough and does well in cooler climates as it is frost-hardy. I ventured outside today, very cold and dreary, and found this little gem just unfurling from the large green leaves they like to hide under. I have always loved these plants. Over the years I had collected some of the new hybrids- quite beautiful tall flowers and also pickable. This is always a bonus in winter to have something in a vase. I think through my being away for a few years the hybrids have been lost in the garden. I will start again this winter and replace these brave little winter joys......
