The Stiperstones, Manstone Rock

The Stiperstones area is one of Shropshire's most spectacular landscapes. The skyline is dominated by a 6 mile ridge of 480 million year old quartzite crags rising dramatically above traditional hill farms and heather moorland.
The area is steeped in history and folklore - there are ancient cairns, hill forts and the evocative remains of old lead mines as well as spine-chilling tales of The Devil, Wild Edric and local witches. It is also a haven for wildlife and includes The Stiperstones National Nature Reserve.
In the 18th and 19th centuries this was a busy industrial area with a series of small mines extracting lead, zinc, barytes, and other minerals. The mining history dates back to Roman times but the main period of production was the 1870's when the area produced over 10% of Britains lead.
I took this on the way home from competing in the 27th Bishops Castle Tandem Triathlon. I won't give you the result as it is too embarrasing but we did finish.
