Le Regard de la Lanterne

This is translated into a Manhole of the Lantern.  Built in 1563 in what was then the countryside around Paris (now the 19th arrondissement) it served to check the quality of the water arriving from the aquaduct of Belleville.  It is now situated on the edge of a small park, and is classified an historical monument, of course, and is still used.
