The Art of Summer
A short pause filled with gasping breath, "Look at the butterflys" she squeals with delight. A small person chasing, (I'm guessing) her brother considering the sheer determination & energy being expelled.
Maniacal laugh of a small boy enjoying the freedom of outrunning his sister, "You never gonna catch me". He stops to notice the wall of colour .... "Can you climb it?"
Defiant joy. "Gotcha" followed by giggling and dancing and a proclaimation of sisterly superiority "No, they're butterflys".
I smile. They do look like butterflys and it definitely looks climable ... & with that I leave the game of tag & the magic of the main gallery to explore the extraordinary architectual installation of John Wardle Architects in the NGV gardens.
1350 hand folded polypropylene elements make a wave of butterflys that shade you from the harshness of the sun and let the dapled light play on the floor of the gardens. Music filters through the colours and the whole structure dances. The magic from the gallery has made its way outside. It is beautiful.
I wonder back inside.
Stomping footsteps ...no its a jump .... and another.... (apparently the most fun way to get around the gallery). There's gasping for air "This place is cool" ...
Rapid desparate gasps for air with punctuating words "yep, (gasp, gasp) I like the broken (gasp) bikes".
"Yeah ... & the butterflys".
Excitment!
"Hey look at that tree!!!"
The National Gallery of Victoria ... it's a magical place :)
