Before the day descended into a drunken orgy of gluttony and distended stomachs at our works christmas meal, we dined on culture at Tate Britain. A bit of a yin yang day.
What you see here is an installation by Susan Philipsz. There isn't much to see because it's a sound installation. And wonderful and moving it was too. It consists of recordings of fourteen British and German brass and wind instruments that have been damaged in 200 years of conflicts playing a very slow 'the last post'. Some instruments are so battered that they can barely play a note, and the other notes sound fragile and hard fought. Together, bouncing up and down and across the magnificent hall the sound is beautiful and plaintive.
