The Protestants wanted a free Netherlands that not been occupied by the Spaniards. The struggle for independence lasted 80 years. The Eighty Years' War lasted from 1568 to 1648. There was in this period a twelve-year truce between 1609 and 1621. In this period there was officially no fighting between the parties. William of Orange would play an important role in the organization of Protestant resistance. This canon is one of the remnants of the war.
