Manhattan from the Whitney
I visited the Whitney Museum of Art's new building for the second time today. This grey day view to the north was merged from five horizontal shots, taken from the spacious terrace on the 8th (top) floor. My blip on my visit in August looked south, on a gorgeous sunny day--a total contrast. In this view the Empire State Building pokes up just right of center, and the High Line is in the left foreground; it's an extended elevated park built on an old rail freight line; it terminates just to the east of the Whitney's building. Here's a good shot of the new building, with more info.
The objective of my visit was a spectacular retrospective exhibition of the American artist Frank Stella (b. 1936), covering his entire career. His works are generally very large, and often 3-dimensional, hanging from the wall. They are wonderfully displayed over the 18,000 sq. feet (ca. 1700 m²) 5th floor gallery. The preceding link includes a slide show of excellent installation views--worth a look, whether or not you know Stella's work.
