rollingrollingrolling...
something different for a festival day out this year - L has popped over from glasgow and we're spending the afternoon watching roller derby! i fell in love with it watching the coming-of-age just-cheesy-enough american film that is whip it, now i find it's actually quite popular in scotland, too - in fact, one of my work colleagues plays! today, the auld reekie roller girls put up top team twisted thistles against the stuttgart valley roller girls from germany. what really sold us? they have a cake stall :-)
unlike in the film, scotland plays on flat track - the edinburgh league is part of an international association that although cleaves to the concept of by skaters, for skaters, and the home-made ethos (and crazy names of the skaters), also likes to make things professional and sport-like, rather than just girls fighting.
L and i didn't have a clue, but the brief programme notes and the two great commentators made sure we could just about keep up with what was happening. and i dunno if it was the chocolate cherry cupcake sugar overload or the fact it was a long time since i'd cheered on a team, by the second half we were cheering ourselves hoarse every time the thistles' jammers got another point on the board! they lost in the end, but only by a cople of points in the last jams. a fabulous afternoon.
i want to go and buy skates now...
