Helena climbs the Tor
Ultra-indulgent Granddad gives a helping hand, or, rather, back.....
These steps are new-fangled modern additions to the ancient holy hill, put by the National Trust to help reduce erosion. But my father, when I was about Helena's age, told us how the monks of Glastonbury Abbey would make people do penance for their sins by climbing up the slope on their knees - and if they had been especially wicked, they would be made to put dried peas inside their hose!
