Scarlet crab apples

..for Boxing Day.

As Boxing Day was traditionally the day the rich had Christmas boxes put together for 'the poor' and 'tradesmen', I wonder if they ever included crab apples like these - scarlet and looking wonderful, even so late in the year (though truth to tell many of them are beginning to melt in the rain).  Anyway, they hang over the wall of the Abbott's house at the bottom of my road and I thought they were looking remarkably bright and festive for such a day.

A chilly walk and by the time we got home it was almost dark.

On the upside, there's enough food in the fridge I won't need to wield a saucepan for at least 3 weeks!
