Going on an adventure
To provide hydro power for a mill, the Barwon River was dammed quite early in the history of white settlement in this area. So while the bulk of the water flows speedily through a trace at this section, the rest of the river dries up in the summer revealing something of the ancient geological backdrop to this part of the world.
For this flat and benign landscape was once the scene of erupting volcanoes and lava flows. The rocks in this river bed are basalt, and clumsily fit together like a practice run for the Irish Giant's Causeway or Fingal's Cave in Scotland.
There is still a couple of hazards in scrambling over the rocks to reach the wall of the weir, the greatest being twisting an ankle, but the more worrying is meeting a snake.
This is Miss C following brother and dog on the easy homewards section. I love walking down here with the dog, without the need to go scrambling, as it is a changing landscape with plenty of bird life and feels just that wee bit wild.
