Whale's Tail at Gunwharf Quays
Designed by Richard Farrington, the bronze Whale's Tail Sculpture was commissioned by Berkeley Homes as part of a 106 Agreement. The surface is incised with imagery taken from the 16th century charts of Iceland by Ortelius and A pianus's Cosmographia that is probably the worlds 1st atlas. It was finally put in place in 2008.
In the background you can see the Spinaker Tower (see 2nd photo) which has been renamed the Emirates Spinaker Tower. I am told that there was a huge row because they wanted to paint it red - but red is the colour of the Southampton football team. So it has been partly painted blue. personally I preferred the white.
