Epiphanie "Fête des Rois"

Epiphanie, the Kings' Feast day, is only on Wednesday (January 6) but this is the  last Sunday prior, so the local pastry shop window is full of the traditional "galette des rois" and a newer one, the King's Crown cake.

A very traditional pastry for Kings' Feast Day, the galette des rois, a delicious, rich almond-paste and pâte feuilleté cake hides a ceramic token inside.  The one who gets the token in his/her piece of cake, will become the King of the day.  A favorite for children and adults alike!

Years ago, you could only get this cake in January, but  in recent years it has shown up in bakeries and shops before. I saw them in mid-December this year!  That's sort of like having your Thanksgiving pumpkin and pecan pies at Halloween!!
