I once had an interesting origami book which dealt with modular models. That is models that are made up of lots smaller modular parts that fit together into a larger structure.

The book got lent and never returned but I spotted our departmental origami expert with one on his desk that I always thought might make a good lampshade. With all the home decorating work that's going on just now, thoughts returned to the idea.

It's quite a simple couple of folds but makes up into a rather complex 3d star shape. Just need to see if it scales up appropriately.
