Tiny Tuesday : : Maple Seeds

We have forgotten how to behave when it rains.
Drains are clogged
Streets are flooded
Creeks are rising
Trees are falling
More record rain is coming

During a lull, I parked near a very pathetic little tree. I thought it still had dead leaves clinging to it, but they fluttered in the wind and upon closer inspection turned out to be maple seeds.  Perhaps because of the drought they produce these seeds during the winter in huge numbers.

When Will was about two, during the last drought/El Niño cycle, the elm trees in our neighborhood produced little seeds like these which fell to the ground in massive quantities. Over the following decade, almost all of the massive elms were dead weakened by drought and attacked by disease.

OilMan and I can still picture Will's excitement as he jumped in piles of seeds, throwing them in the air and watching them flutter to the ground like a cloud of insects. The wonder and curiosity of children over simple things is lost so quickly. They grow up so quickly, lured away from simple things by the fast moving expectations of a more complicated life.
