Purplepore Bracket

3 days 3 fungi - hmmm, can I make it a week....
I'd wanted this for Tiny Tuesday but yesterday's Turkeytail won in the end & as I'm off to Cairngorm at the weekend I decided to get back up the ladder & try again.
Trichaptum abietinum is very often misidentified - which for such a beautifully striking fungi seems odd at first glance - but despite its common name this fungi, though fairly common, is often found looking mostly brown with little or no purple and pink visible. It also comes in a range of shapes and sizes.
This (I think) stunning specimen is the most prominent growth of a fungi that covers about 3m of a dead conifer, this pictured growth form being about 10cm across by 6cm high and projecting 3cm or so which is incredible as each tightly placed bracket is probably no more than 1-2cm .
For ID again there are some good clues in the name 'with clinging hairs' comes from Trichaptum and 'inhabiting fir trees' is taken from abietinum, but I needed the ladder for a reason - from the underneath it has a tendency to simply look dull & grey and is near impossible to recognise.
