Unexpected Christmas Hit #2

Santa brought this for Alex (Out and About, a First Book of Poems by Shirley Hughes) I wondered whether it was merely a stocking filler and might sit on the shelf but silly me to doubt!  Alex loves it and has been reading it as his own bedtime story. The poems are simple but very evocative and charming and the pictures with it are lovely.

(to people who don't know me, an attack of self indulgence follows so you have permission to stop reading!). This is Alex's favourite poem from the book - he says it reminds him of playing in the garden with the paddling pool last Summer.

Squirting Rainbows

Bare legs,
Bare toes,
Paddling pool,
Garden hose,
Daisies sprinkled in the grass,
Dandelions bold as brass,
Squirting rainbows,
Sunbeam flashes,
Backyards full of shrieks and splashes!
