A sacred place but no cattle egret!
Went to a place that I'd never been to before today - Iken on the Alde estuary, quite near to Snape. We went because a cattle egret had recently been in the vicinity. Unfortunately there was no sign today which A said was no surprise as they always disappear when he goes to look for them!
This is the view across the estuary to the north bank of the river. Though distant it was easy to see avocet, shelduck, redshank and curlew. The sound of curlew is one of the most beautiful things especially in such a landscape.
The church in the photo is considered to be on one of the most sacred sites in Suffolk. The spit of land on which it is built (called the Anchorage) is almost certainly the spot where St Botolph established a church in 654 as Christianity became the religion of the Anglo-Saxons. So a church has been on this site for over 1350 years.
