In January!!

Went for another lovely walk again today although the weather was pretty grey and miserable. We went along a short part of the Grand Union Canal which is quite near where we live. There was quite a lot of this blossom around - no idea what it is and I am hoping someone can enlighten me. Is this normal for early January?
