The Church of the Holy Rude
This, pictured at dusk this evening from the Castle forecourt, is the mediaeval parish church of Stirling, with its surrounding graveyard.
"Holy Rude" in modern day parlance means"Holy Cross".
The church was founded in 1129, during the reign of King David 1st of Scotland, although the oldest part of the present building dates from the 15th Century, making it, after the Castle itself, the second oldest building in Stirling.
This church is where King James VI of Scotland (and later1st of England) was crowned in 1567.
The church is notable for being the only surviving one in Britain, apart from Westminster Abbey in London, to have held the coronation of a monarch.
