Cairo Gap Site

The pink building is the Egyptian Museum. The blue, taller one to the right is the former Nile Hilton, now recently re-opened as the Nile Ritz-Carlton and the yellow buildings in between stand on the edge of Tahrir Square and were, until recently, obscured by the block-of-flats-like HQ of the National Democratic Party (Mubarak’s lot) and the Woman's National Council. It was burned out on 28th January 2011 at the height of the revolution and only recently demolished. As a building-institution, it was as reviled by the populace as much as the Gestapo HQ in Berlin which met a similar fate post-WW2.

The army is beginning to show its face on the street again as we approach the fifth anniversary of the revolution this coming Monday. The police are detaining anyone who they think may lead protests like the Head of the Doctors' Union who was whisked down to his local station and accused of a whole host of things which could lead to years in jail.

Do see my blip of yesterday for a style Facebook or other social media posting to encourage donations towards Blipfuture. It would require a little bit of editing for Twitter.
