FIGGY's Sporadic Blips

Auchmithie

is a former fishing village in Scotland three miles north of Arbroath, Angus.

The village sits approximately 120 feet above a shingle beach atop a cliff of red sandstone of the Devonian geologic period which spans from about 2.8 - 2.5 million years ago.

Among the pebbles, deposited by a massive ancient river-delta, are large amounts of jasper. Predominantly dark red in colour, rarer green and yellow examples can also be found.

The Arbroath Smokie originated in Auchmithie.

'Musslecrag' of Sir Walter Scott's novel The Antiquary, was based on the village.
