Mono Monday: Tradition
I had a meeting in North Manchester mid afternoon, so on my way there took a very short detour to blip some shops.
One of our (wholly unexpected) highlights of last year was the semi-staged version of "Fiddler on the Roof" at the BBC Proms. Bryn Terfel was tremendous, and the opening number - "Tradition" - was fantastic. Which leads me to ...........
Brackmans, a kosher bakery and coffee shop which has been at the heart of Broughton Park for over 80 years. One of the largest orthodox jewish communities outside Israel occupies an area which covers parts of Salford, Manchester and Bury. There are clearly a whole series of traditions and religious observances which lie at the heart of how people here live their lives. The ingredients at the bakery are inspected by a rabbi every day, and he also says a prayer over the dough. There is a fascinating BBC video about the shop (taken from a programme called "How to make a loaf") which can be found on the website - google "Brackens Bakery Salford" (I have no idea how to do links).
