Mandarin Duck
I'd heard that there was a Mandarin duck on the pond at Figgate Park, so stopped off on the way home from a birding trip to Musselburgh yesterday. Lots of birds, but no sign of the Mandarin, so we left, assuming that it had moved on.
Later found a sighting report that it had been seen about 20 minutes after we left!
We went back this morning and were treated to a lovely show by this delightful little fellow. It's the first time I've ever seen one. These birds are not common in Scotland, with the RSPB estimating only about 50 pairs in the country, mainly as a result of escapees from wildfowl collections.
He's on his own so may well move on soon, but a delight to have seen him.
Extra is of him with the resident drake shoveller.
