Puir Jean.....

Jean Douglas was in love with the son of the laird of Tushielaw.   Her father, the Earl of March, considered Tushielaw below her station. she  pined while her lover was sent away. When he returned she was so wasted that he did not recognise her, and she died of a broken heart.

It was alright though because Sir Walter Scott immortalised her in verse in his poem "The Maid of Neidpath."     And they say that you may still see her, floating around the castle, in great distress.
