Flower Friday 22: alien species?

I've no idea what this plant is.  Cathy was given it recently for her birthday. Its probably some sort of succulent, but neither of us have seen anything quite like it before.  Its not the most attractive of plants, and (between you and me) I'm not sure that it will be with us for that long.  Not because it won't thrive, it shows every sign of doing very well, very well indeed.  Possibly, too well.

Having grown up enjoying Ray Bradbury's short stories of strange goings on, John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids and films such as the Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I'm not too sure its wise to give this one house room ;-)
