Aaaaaaand... debrief.
If you're the only girl on a resuscitation attempt, you tend to be the one to go 'speak to the family'. I don't mind. But it never gets any easier. How can it, when you're witnessing someone's world falling apart in front of you? Today's was just plain unfair. He was a year younger than me. They'd only been married two years. One minute he was there, laughing and playing the fool, and the next he was gone.
I put more of myself into jobs like these than any other call we go to. I asked for a cuppa and a few minutes' time out afterwards to gather my myself before the next job. Joy's little note with my sandwiches made me smile, and reminded me that no day is too mundane to say 'You mean the world to me'.
I downed my tea, celebrated the forgotten chocolate bar I'd found in my coat pocket, jumped back into the car, and greened up for the next job. Life goes on.
