The Chequers Pub
Our village pub is being refurbished, which is good news. The bad news is that for some reason Greene King want to rename it, which is causing a degree of resistance.
We are in the Chilterns, not far from the Prime Minister's country residence and the word "chequers" does not refer to the board, but to the Chequers Tree - or Wild Service Tree. Records exist of the licence going back to 1753, the pub was used by Clement Atlee who lived around here when he was Prime Minister, and the present sign was unveiled by Harold Wilson when he was PM.
Feels like our local history is being trashed. Feel we might have a fight on our hands.
