It's part of the fabric of the city of Southampton, and the Bargate, the most striking part of the relics of the city's historic walls, is an icon recognised worldwide.
Now it is within the pedestrianised area of the city centre, but I can remember the time when traffic passed through the arch of the ancient gateway.
While many parts of the city centre have changed over the years, thankfully the Bargate remains, having escaped wartime bombing and along with the ancient city walls which once provided fortifications for the city and its port, is now as much symbolic of the city, as say its football team, the docks or its shopping centre.
I cannot claim to be a Sotonian by birth, but have spent the greater part of my life in and around the city, and for much of that time working within little more than a stone's throw from the Bargate..
So that anytime I am in the city centre these days, sight of the Bargate fills me with pride.
