The way the studs resist turning when you lean onto the shoulder of the tyre is a bit like the way a tyre resists turning when it's getting a bit flat. It was too noisy to tell on the street where the telltale bouncing started, but the ticking of the centimetre-long piece of glass protruding from the tread would probably be quite similar to the ticking of the studs on the road. Only one and a half commutes into this year's studs-deployment and I had to take the scumbag thing off again at lunchtime. It only took five minutes to remove and patch the hole and add a boot but took at least fifty to get it back on, which I only achieved by cheating and carefully using a tyre lever.
