Pounding

.... The mochi takes a fair amount of trust, particularly for the lady turning the rice in between the mallet strikes.

That mallett was pretty heavy, so the mochi making was hard work. We did get to try it once we'd worked up an appetite.

Machines do all the hard work these days but on special occasions there's nothing like a bit of tradition.
